From July 5 to 10, 2026, the XII National Crystal Chemistry Conference was held in Apatity (Murmansk Region). This large-scale forum, which brought together leading experts in the fields of crystal chemistry and materials science, was dedicated to a significant date – the 100th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scientist Yuri Timofeevich Struchkov.
The conference, organized with the support of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Federal Research Center for Problems of Chemical Physics and Medicinal Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and the Kola Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, gathered a wide range of participants from various research and educational institutions across the country. The rich scientific program included plenary and sectional sessions, where the most current achievements and prospects for the development of crystal chemistry were discussed.
Participation in the conference allowed the staff of the Research Center "Engineering Barriers" not only to present the results of their scientific work but also to strengthen research ties. In particular, one of the conference days featured a visit to the Shared-Use Facilities Center of the Kola Science Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, which enabled discussions on possible areas of scientific and technical cooperation and outlined the prospects for joint work.
During the conference, a keynote invited talk was presented by Dr. Viktoria V. Krupskaya, a Leading Researcher at the Research Center "Engineering Barriers" and Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences. Her presentation was titled "Crystal-Chemical Features of Clay Minerals as a Key to Justifying the Safety of Radioactive Waste Isolation" and addressed the issues of stability and transformations of clay minerals in technogenic processes.
A report was also prepared by Tatyana A. Koroleva, a 2nd-year postgraduate student at the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IGEM RAS), who presented the results of her research on the topic: "Influence of Hydrothermal Synthesis Conditions on the Formation of Kaolinite and Smectite Group Minerals."
