On the eve of Geologist Day, Sergei Mironov, Chairman of the Political Party "A JUST RUSSIA — FOR TRUTH" and head of the party faction in the State Duma, visited the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy and Geochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IGEM RAS).

The program included a visit to several laboratories covering various aspects of material research, as well as the Ore and Petrographic Museum of IGEM RAS.

One of the points of the tour was the Scientific Center for the Development and Assessment of Long-Term Safety of Engineered Barriers for Radioactive Waste Isolation. The head of the Scientific Center, Victoria Krupskaya, together with one of the center’s leading specialists, Sergey Zakusin, told Sergei Mikhailovich about the actively ongoing work on creating engineered safety barriers for deep geological disposal of radioactive waste and showed various experiments on the evolution of engineered safety barriers. Both large-scale mock-up experiments, clearly demonstrating the processes occurring in buffer materials, and modern equipment allowing for a significant body of research on buffer materials at a high level were demonstrated.
